The days when Michael Ninn was feted by the mainstream press and seemed to be ushering in a new Golden Age of porn may long be gone, but Porn Star proves he still has the power to impress.

Not only with the provocative title (the US industry tends to shy away from the 'P' word, but also with its cynical look at the jizz biz, featuring Brittney Skye as a spoilt porn starlet who’s petulant demands hide her inner pain, Ninn challenges the image that the jizz bix tries to prject of itself. Not since David Aaron Clark’s astonishing Poison Candy has a smut merchant delivered such a bleak study of the sex industry.

Not that it's all grimness though. At least half the movie plays like MTV music videos - with no hardcore sex and a hip-hop/nu-metal soundtrack.

Whether any of it works as a porn flick is questionable, but you have to admire Ninn's willingness to try something different.
