BRIDES

HERE COME THE BRIDES
Mayan Records
Featuring
former members of Motley Crue and L.A. Guns, and with a lead
vocalist rejoicing in the name London Le Grand - which we suspect
he wasn't born with - you kinda know what to expect form this.
Yet you might be wrong...
Although
VERY LA-sounding, this is more like the punked up, aggressive
sound of Guns 'n' Roses than the horrible 'good times' poodle
music of Poison and the like, and album opener Shut The Fuck
Up is a pretty solid statement of intent. Like the best
sleazy rock 'n' roll, the Brides combine singalong, fist-punching
anthems with spit-in-your-face attitude, and for a while it
works really well.
The
problems start about half way through, when the album seems
to have been on for a lot longer than it actually has - never
a good sign. While any of these songs might be perfectly fine
on their own, a whole LP's worth starts to feel somewhat repetitive,
and the defiant attitude ("shut the fuck up"..." I don't
care"...brace yourself")becomes increasingly desperate sounding.
That
said, individual moments like moody ballad I Got a Gun,
with it's blistering chorus, do suggest that there is life in
these ageing rockers. They just need to mix it up a little more.
And even with my reservations, it goes without saying that the
band piss on certain other glam-rock pretenders (and probably
still look younger than 'em too!).
Their
past 'glories' will probably damn them forever to many people,
there is enough decent material here to suggest that the Brides
of Destruction might at least temporarily feed the appetites
of some people while Axl continues to fart around...
